It is critically important that our industry stand together to support legislation which is favorable to the business community while opposing legislation which could negatively impact the moving industry. Only by electing lawmakers friendly to business will we be able to protect our interests. Your contribution to MOVERS PAC helps give us the resources to assist our friends in their fall campaigns.
This fall, the entire State House of Representatives will be up for election. With 110 seats being contested, there is ample opportunity for the MMA to participate in support of pro business candidates and incumbents.
Each contributor to MOVERS PAC will receive a thank you letter, be recognized on our website, listed in the Winter MMA newsletter, and will receive special recognition at the MMA Convention in January including an invitation to a private reception with a legislator or guest pundit. There are four contribution levels from which you may choose.
Chairman's Club - for contributors of $500 or more
President's Club - for contributors of between $250 - $499
Advocates Club - for contributors of between $100 - $249
MOVERS PAC Supporter - for contributors of $50 - $99
4 Common Questions about PACs
How does the MMA decide which candidates/incumbents receive contributions?
The MMA consults with the Michigan State Chamber of Commerce, and the National Federation of Independent Businesses (NFIB) to determine which incumbents and candidates have the best track record or philosophy which is favorable to the business community. We also monitor voting records to determine which incumbents are truly backing their business philosophy with their pro-business vote.
I keep reading statements that PACs are merely vehicles to buy votes and influence. Is that correct?
If multiple PACs are controlled by one or a few lobbyists, there is the risk that the funds they control cumulatively could lead to undue influence. The MMA MOVERS PAC follows the original philosophy behind PACs, that being a group of people with a collective interest pooling their contribution dollars to help elect candidates who share their point of view. We do not give to candidates prior to, or immediately after a vote. We support candidates in the primary and general elections only, and do not participate in fundraisers throughout the year.
Who makes the final decision about which candidates receive funds, and the amount they receive?
The MMA Executive Committee consults with the Michigan State Chamber, and NFIB to determine which candidates have the greatest need for funds. We focus on committee chairmanships, party leaders and others in positions of influence who may have direct input on issues we deem important.
Of the dollars I contribute to MOVERS PAC, how much goes to actual candidate contributions versus administrative overhead?
100% of the funds you contribute to MOVERS PAC are used for candidate contributions. All PAC contributions are kept in a separate checking account, which is part of a quarterly report required by the state to track all donations and candidate contributions. Any administrative costs related to PAC promotion or marketing are paid for by the MMA through a budgeted line item from our general treasury.
